The Ultimate Cover Up
Last year at the Americorps and National Service Conference in Orlando, the Christian Contractors Association held a training workshop demonstrating the proper way to install a blue roof during times of emergency response.
The workshop was called “The Ultimate Cover-Up.” The description read, “Christian Contractors Association, with 30,000 roofs’ worth of experience in making temporary repairs, will teach participants to safely and professionally apply tarping to damaged roofs to protect disaster survivors' belongings from further harm.”
CCA missionaries, Glenn Kasper, Ray Roddis and Roy Isley, were able to present the procedures with various media. A visual slideshow was used as class participants followed along with a newly printed “Safety Procedures” manual.
A hands-on approach was presented with a miniature representation of a roof. With this roof model, steps such as ‘nail the furring strips to crown or fascia’ could be practiced with the correct method.
Ray Roddis, CCA team leader shared, “They were so excited to get up, grab a hammer and pound a nail! Not only do we practice safety with volunteer teams, but we also get the opportunity to reach out to them spiritually.”
During the event of a natural disaster, CCA is responsible for organizing and coordinating volunteers. CCA team leaders will use the mock roof to explain how to safely dry-in a home.
Each volunteer will also receive a safety procedures manual.
